With over 25 years of experience, Nicolas Fehlmann Ingénieurs Conseils SA (NFIC) places innovation and optimization at the heart of its civil engineering projects. Driven by the desire to pass on these core values, we welcomed six children, including five young girls, to our Morges office on Thursday, November 14, 2024, as part of the Oser Tous les Métiers Day (JOM). This event provided a unique opportunity to raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of designing sustainable, resource-efficient structures while discovering the exciting profession of civil engineering.

Learning Optimization from an Early Age

One of the highlights of the day was a fun workshop dedicated to material optimization. The challenge: build the tallest tower possible using the fewest wooden blocks. This educational game reflects the core principles of civil engineering, where material efficiency is crucial in the pursuit of sustainable and effective solutions.
The young participants rose brilliantly to the challenge, exploring various approaches to balance stability and lightness. This activity provided a tangible and enjoyable way to convey the importance of material efficiency—a central focus in our professional practices at NFIC.

A Glimpse into the Challenges of Civil Engineering

In addition to the workshop, the children had the chance to learn about the role of a civil engineer through interactive presentations, discussions with our experts, and a visit to a construction site in Morges. Under professional supervision, they even operated a crane, gaining insight into how technical choices impact project execution.

Passing on a Sustainable Vision

At NFIC, we believe civil engineering goes beyond construction—it’s about building intelligently, sustainably, and with respect for resources. By sharing this vision with young minds, we hope to spark their awareness of environmental challenges and inspire them to imagine innovative solutions for the future.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the participants for their enthusiasm and curiosity, and we look forward to inspiring the next generation of engineers in future editions of JOM.
