THE CHALLENGE

Located in the heart of the village of Etoy, on a historically significant square, this former farm—comprising a dwelling and a barn—had been abandoned. Classified as a grade 3 heritage site, the building held important patrimonial value, requiring the preservation of its façade and characteristic structural elements. The challenge was therefore to restore and convert the entire structure into housing, while respecting the existing architectural identity and meeting current construction and energy standards. The location in the village center, with adjoining buildings, added an extra constraint: organizing the construction site within a limited space while minimizing the impact on neighboring structures.

OUR RESPONSE

We supported the transformation of this farm into 4 apartments, using an approach that combines respect for the historic building with compliance to modern standards. Underpinning work was carried out to create new living spaces beneath the existing structure— a delicate operation necessary to optimize space without altering the building’s integrity. The original load-bearing structure, including the wooden floors, was treated and reinforced. Insulation was adapted to ensure thermal comfort while preserving as much of the original materials as possible. This intervention gave new life to this emblematic building, providing it with a new purpose while maintaining its character and its place within the village’s historic fabric.
